A deeper investigation has lead us to believe that the novel The Bad Seed has many similarities to Alison DiLaurentis. Reviewing the book we’ve made several connections to Alison’s character.
Plot Summary: Eight-year-old Rhoda is the only child of Kenneth and Christine Penmark. Kenneth goes away on business, leaving Christine and Rhoda at home. Christine begins to notice that Rhoda is acting strangely toward one of her classmates, Claude Daigle, who mysteriously drowns at a school picnic. The boy’s death is presumed accidental, except for one unexplained detail: his face was dappled with strange crescent shaped marks. Christine learns that Rhoda quarreled with Claude over a perfect penmanship medal that the boy won but which Rhoda believed she deserved, and has lied about the last time she saw her classmate.
Character Rhoda closely depicts Alison. Although Alison isn’t the only child of Jessica DiLaurentis. I’m beginning to think that perhaps, the blonde that Dr. Palmer mentioned in 4.06 was referring to Alison instead of CeCe. The Bad Seed states :
Christine begins to notice that Rhoda is acting strangely toward one of her classmates, Claude Daigle, who mysteriously drowns at a school picnic. The boy’s death is presumed accidental, except for one unexplained detail: his face was dappled with strange crescent shaped marks. Christine learns that Rhoda quarreled with Claude over a perfect penmanship medal that the boy won but which Rhoda believed she deserved, and has lied about the last time she saw her classmate.
Jessica tells Hanna in 4.02 that “Alison perfected the stunt of holding her breath when she was really young, just to torture her.” Going off of this alone, I’m thinking Alison did a lot of things just to torture her mother.
In episode 4.10, Jessica recalls a moment of a stunt that CeCe pulled at Radley. The time period is somewhere between 2006-2007, most likely during the time that Marion Cavanaugh was in Radley. Alison is most likely 13 at this time. she and CeCe Drake put together a scheme to scare her mother, Jessica. Alison dares CeCe to visit Radley pretending to be her, but why is Alison fascinated by Radley?
- Early that year Marion Cavanaugh walked in on Toby and Ali, just as they were about to kiss. Was this going to be Ali’s first kiss? Who knows but you could tell she wasn’t that happy when Marion interrupted the moment.
- Alison’s sassy comment about his mother being lazy, upset Toby therefore, he told Ali to leave.
- Alison was upset by this and took her anger out on Toby by constantly teasing him later down the line.
- But nothing will account for what she did to his mother.
Just like the Bad Seed, Alison would murder Marion out of spite, just to get back at Toby. Crazy as it seems, no one would even suspect her as the one to commit the crime due to her daring CeCe to visit Radley clothed as her. Meaning if anyone saw her on the premises they would assume it was CeCe Drake instead of Alison because Jessica had already witnessed CeCe pretending to be Ali. Covering her tracks fairly well, Alison and Marion are on the roof of Radley, allowing her anger to take the better of her Ali pushes Marion from the roof.
Thinking back to the 1956 movie, Rhoda tells her mother that she asked Claude for the medal but he didn’t give it to her, so she chased him. Could Ali have chased Marion to the roof of Radley and that’s how she came to be on the roof? in the first place?
Jessica gets a call from Radley just as she realizes Ali isn’t in her room. A nurse from Radley is claiming Marion Cavanaugh has died. Jessica rushes to Radley and is stopped in her tracks by Bethany, who is claiming that she saw Marion with Alison. Jessica orders the nurses to isolate Bethany as she tries to control the situation and keep Bethany quiet.
She then pays Darren Wilden to alter the report to make it seem like an accident to cover Ali’s tracks by saying that it was a “fragile patient.” The fragile patient, would later be Bethany Young, as Mrs. D covered the truth to protect Ali thus, falsely accusing Bethany whose name was never mentioned in the report. This could be the reason Bethany drew so many horrible pictures of Jessica. So Bethany knew the whole truth about Marion’s murder but Jessica began bribing her to keep her quiet.
Notice the connection to the Bad Seed, a little boys death was presumed an accident just as Marion Cavanaugh’s death was presumed an accident but in reality it was all a big coverup. Here’s another connection.
In the meantime, Leroy Jessup, the crude-minded maintenance man at the Penmark’s apartment, is the only adult who sees through Rhoda’s charming facade. He relentlessly teases the child, believing her responsible for Claude’s death. He tells Rhoda that police can discover traces of blood on the cleated shoes she used to beat Claude, the cleats that left crescent-moon marks on his face, and the cleats she hasn’t worn since Claude’s death. Afraid Leroy will expose her, Rhoda waits until he’s asleep in his shed and lights his mattress on fire, killing him. A shocked Christine witnesses the murder, but others attribute Leroy’s death to falling asleep while smoking.
This connection is exactly what I believed happened to Bethany Young. Alison’s story about what happened that night just seemed a little off to me so I pieced it together using some of the references from the Bad Seed.
Bethany escapes from Radley wearing the same outfit as Ali due to Jessica buying her the exact top. The two girls come face to face, Bethany threatens Ali, telling her that she is going to tell everyone what she has done. Bethany’s comment enraged Ali, so she grabs a shovel as Bethany is turning to leave and smashes her in the back of the head, causing the indentation to her skull.
Back-tracking a little bit, I recall Jason telling Aria that his mom only joined the board (fashion show 2.06) because of Ali. What if this was the case with Radley? What if Jessica only joined the board to find out information as to why Alison was doing the things she did? What if she worked there to get information on mentally ill patients? Here’s another book reference:
Faced with Rhoda’s deception, Christine begins to reevaluate a few troubling incidents from the past. After Rhoda had begged her parents for a dog, she quickly became bored with it, and the animal died in what Rhoda described as an accidental fall from the apartment window. An elderly neighbor had promised Rhoda a necklace upon her death, and soon after died from a fall down the stairs while babysitting Rhoda. Additionally, Rhoda was expelled from her school for repeatedly lying. Disturbed by the idea that her daughter might be a murderer, Christine begins investigating true crime stories and indirectly asks friends for advice under the guise of writing a novel. Christine discovers that she was adopted as a young child and that her birth mother is Bessie Denker, a notorious serial killer about whom she has fragmented memories. Christine feels guilty and blames herself for passing on the murderous “bad seed” to her daughter, yet hopes that Rhoda might have unintentionally killed Claude during a squabble over the medal. Christine writes a series of lengthy, tortured letters to her husband expressing her worries, but never mails them.
Referencing the book, I have no doubt that Ali could have been the one that caused Mrs. Potter’s heart attack. We are shown in 1.17 someone in dark clothing putting flowers on her grave and we know ‘A’ set the whole thing up with Hanna and her mom. What if she had scared the old lady so badly that she had the heart attack that eventually killed her?
I mention this because it reminds me so much of the scene from 5.02, where Ali visits Bethany’s grave.
Last connection and final connection:
Christine confronts Rhoda, who initially attempts to lie and manipulate her mother before confessing to killing Claude, Leroy and their neighbor in Baltimore, all the while shifting blame to the victims and expressing no remorse. Christine is now unable to deny Rhoda’s crimes and fears that Rhoda will end up like Bessie Denker. She gives Rhoda an entire bottle of sleeping pills and then shoots herself. The child survives however Christine dies. It is implied that Rhoda will follow her grandmother’s path and commit more acts of murder.
Ali told the liars that her mom buried her and clearly there were two burials that night so what if Jessica buried Ali for the same reasons Christine buried Rhoda. Perhaps, Jessica feared that there was no helping Alison and she would continue on the same path that she’s been on with the lies, manipulation, and murders. So she buried Alison and Mrs. Grunwald pulled her out, similar to Rhoda who survived the bottle of sleeping pills that her mother gave her. Ali survived the burial and was hiding out torturing her friends and committing murders that haven’t been solved for the past two years because she’s covering her tracks fairly well.
Or, here’s an alternate theory ending to Ali’s story about her mom burying her. What if Jessica buried Bethany, whom she saw Alison hit with the shovel and instead of Alison being the one being buried it was Bethany and Jessica asked Ali over and over “What have you done?” This would explain that Jessica was protecting Alison all along and therefore, knew about her being alive. So that would mean Melissa buried Alison instead of Bethany like she assumed and Jessica buried Bethany later on that night after Alison was pulled out of the grave by Mrs. Grunwald.

3.03 ‘Kingdom of the Blind’
This ‘A’ ending showed tools on a glass table; pliers, drill, and two teeth. We were also shown that ‘A’ drinks Vodka and this brought back memories to the 1.02 episode, ‘The Jenna Thing.”
Spencer joins her father, Melissa, and her new boyfriend/fiance Wren. Spencer tells the waiter that she’ll have a vodka soda, Melissa politely tells the gentleman that she is joking but Wren orders a Vodka soda for them to share.
So what could this mean? Both Wren and Spencer drink Vodka soda and both are suspects in the body-napping of whomever was in Alison’s casket first. We’ve mentioned here that there is still another body out there and the ‘A’ that is shown in ‘3.03’ and in ‘4.22’ has this body. Now let’s get a little dirty:
In 3.01 Spencer is awake long before the other girls when Emily comes up missing and is found standing at the foot of Alison DiLaurentis grave with a shovel in her hand. When the liars find Emily Spencer mentions this, “That can’t be right. It says at midnight she got a call from my phone.”
Aria asks Spencer, “You were asleep, right?” Spencer doesn’t answer but tells the girls that someone was in her house. Now we could look at this scenario two ways; one either Spencer was set up or two, Spencer could be doing things that she doesn’t remember doing. We’ve mentioned the later before in this post. Now if Spencer is being framed then this would make sense as to why Aria heard a car door when the girls were listening to Hanna read off her list (3.01).
Another thing to think about is Spencer’s dress from 4.22, the dress wasn’t apart of Jessica’s collection for the fashion show and we were shown in the ending of 4.22 that ‘A’ was making this dress. How did Spencer obtain this dress if Jessica had no idea that the girls would be in the fashion show? Furthermore, why was Spencer so eager to get outside, we understand she spotted Jessica out there but she was already on her way out before she saw Jessica, so what was her intentions?
Another thing, 4.23 could be the link that connects Spencer to the body that was dug up in 3.01. She has the brains to pull it off, Season 4 showed us more about her memory loss from that summer, what else could be going on with Spencer? Is she ‘A’ material or just being framed. Check this link for all of our Spencer theories.
Wren is a strong contender for this ‘A’ as he is in the medical profession and could have very well, pulled the teeth from the body. Also, “I play with body parts,” could be a clue that Wren was the other Redcoat. Remember 4.12!?
Wren hired Shana to do some shipping for him, she was also in Ravenswood with Jenna who was presumably going blind again in 4.06. Were the packages that were sent to the liars, packages from Wren?
Was Wren upset with Mona for her interference with his plan to let Ashley Marin take the fall for Wilden’s murder? Could Wren have killed Mona? He was pretty upset with her in 4.10 and their conversation implied that the two were possibly working together.
My opinion is that the Devil was Wren. He was the one Mona made the deal with. He told Hanna in 3.01 that he volunteers at Radley a few times a month “Quid Pro Quo” meaning something for something. Redcoat showed Mona how to get in and out of Radley,
was it ever told whether or not Sara Harvey was actually dead or not? Similarly to the Maya or Meredith storyline I can't honestly believe this information was given simply to distract us especially since there had never been any mention of Bethany until the season 4 finale. If it was never discovered whether or not she is dead then she may be involved somehow, maybe she's black veil?
I totally get what you mean and I still want believe her storyline is very important and I haven’t ruled her out of the equation as of yet. One reason is because while Bethany is mentioned as the body that was buried in place of Alison, we were never shown a photo of her meaning she could be anyone as of right now. A photo of Sara was shown in 4.14 meaning, we do have some indication of what she looked like.
I’m still under the impression that there are two dead girls and ‘A’ switched the bodies in Season 3 episode 1. I think the girl that was originally killed the night of Ali’s disappearance was Sara Harvey and whoever the Redcoat that was with Mona the night that Alison’s grave was dug up switched the bodies.
I’m thinking the body that ‘A’ was shown with in 3.03 is Sara’s body and due to ‘A’ removing body parts from the body and sending it to the girls.
'A' still have possession of this body and the body that was identified as Bethany's was in fact her's but the body pieces from above belongs to Sara. Also, this can be justified in 4.23 episode when the fingers from another body was within Spencer's dress accessory. Therefore, there's another body out there and it's very possible that it is Sara's.
